Rabat – On the final day of the first group-stage matches, DR Congo and Zambia will face off in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is taking place in Cote d’Ivoire.
The game will be played at the Laurent Pokou Stadium at 9:00 p.m. Moroccan Time, and will be televised on Sky Sports. The live streaming will be on the Sky Go application and the website.
Champions twice in 1968 and 1974, the Congolese national team is placed in Group F alongside Morocco, Tanzania, and Zambia.
Their last appearance in 2019 saw the Congolese Leopards advance to the round of 16 when they were disqualified against Madagascar 2-4 on penalty shootouts.
Commenting on the DR Congo’s ambitions in a recent interview with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), head coach Sebastien Desabre said: “We are in a rebuilding phase. We want to rebuild and perform at the same time,” stressing that the team is “going into the competition with a two-fold objective: to go as far as possible and continue to work on renewing our team.”
Meanwhile, the Zambian team won its only title in 2012, with Equatorial Guinea and Gabon jointly hosting the competition. Its last appearance was in 2015 when it was disqualified from the group stage.
The Zambian midfielder Lubambo Musonda said in a statement to CAF that his team is looking forward to taking the glory again.
“It’s time to get back on top. Surely it will not be easy. But I am glad that we have a team that wants to fight, that wants to win,” Musonda stated.
