Rabat – The suspension of Morocco’s national football team coach, Walid Regragui, has been overturned Friday evening by the Appeals Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), clearing the way for his active presence on the sidelines for the upcoming eighth-final clash against South Africa in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Appeals Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has nullified the disciplinary action taken against Moroccan national team coach Walid Regragui, who was initially handed a four-match suspension, including two on probation.
The CAF Appeals Committee, having heard the arguments presented by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), not only overturned the suspension but also rescinded the accompanying financial penalty.
This verdict paves the way for Regragui’s active involvement on the sidelines during the crucial knockout stage match against South Africa scheduled for next Tuesday.
The original decision, handed down by the pan-African body’s disciplinary committee on January 24, suspended Regragui due to his involvement in the post-match skirmishes following the Morocco’s match with theDRC, , which ended in a 1-1 draw during the second group stage fixture in Group F.
In response to the initial suspension, the FRMF promptly issued a statement expressing their dissatisfaction and labeling the decision as “unjust.” The federation maintained that Regragui had not violated fair-play principles and announced their intent to appeal the decision.
”This decision was unfounded, especially considering that the facts demonstrate that Regragui did not commit any act contrary to fair play,” the federation stated.
They emphasized that Regragui’s alleged misconduct did not align with the accusations against him, and condemned all unsportsmanlike acts that transpired after the Morocco-DRC match without endorsing any particular standpoint.
