Rabat – Moroccan-Spanish footballer Ilias Akhomach said in a recent interview with the Spanish media outlet El Relevo that his decision to represent the Moroccan national football team was not a difficult one to make.
The right-winger, who was born in Spain to Moroccan parents, had to decide how to pursue his international career. He was qualified to represent both his adopted nation and his own nation.
The Villarreal midfielder gave an explanation for his choice during the interview with Spanish media, stating that “at the end of the day, I am still Moroccan; my culture and my origins come from Morocco.”
“It was not a difficult decision to make. I have always been clear about it, and so have the people around me,” declared the young Moroccan international.
Akhomach also expressed gratitude to the Spanish national team, with which he had junior competition experience. “I would like to thank the Spanish team for everything they have done for me,” he added with gratitude.
Akhomach is among the several gifted young Moroccans, like Chadi Riad and Abde Ezzalzouli, who received training from FC Barcelona in its never-ending talent pool. He played for La Roja in the U-16, U-18, U-19, and U-21 levels before choosing to don the Moroccan national jersey.
Following a brief time spent training with FC Barcelona’s first squad under head coach Xavi, the 19-year-old Moroccan has settled comfortably at his new club, Villarreal, where he is now the center of attention.
He is currently making an impression with the U-23 Moroccan squad, where he participated in the most recent gathering, led by Issam Charai – the Belgian coach of the Moroccan national under-23 team – last November.
With the Olympic Games fast approaching, Moroccan fans expect to see the young player take part in the esteemed competition, given the high level he is showcasing with his club.
