Rabat – Mauritania taking the presidency of the African Union (AU) is “well-deserved” and is consistent with the country’s efforts to promote stability and positive engagement across the African continent, said Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita on Saturday.
“Mauritania’s presidency of the African Union is a well-deserved acknowledgment of its role, along with President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani’s leadership, in maintaining stability and addressing critical issues facing the region,” Bourita said while speaking on the sidelines of the AU Summit in Addis Ababa.
He notably acknowledged Morocco’s support for the nomination, stressing the strong bilateral relations between Morocco and Mauritania and noting that King Mohammed VI had provided explicit instructions to back Mauritania’s candidacy.
“The Mauritanian president is well aware of Morocco’s unwavering support, under the directives of His Majesty the King, which will contribute to the success of this presidency,” Bourita added.
Mauritania’s assumption of the African Union presidency marks a significant milestone for the country and reflects its growing influence in regional affairs.
Bourita’s remarks came amid Morocco’s participation in the 37th AU Summit. This year’s summit is scheduled to deliberate on a wide range of continental issues, including the assessment of institutional reforms that the AU has undertaken in recent years.
In addition, the summit will evaluate the progress made in the implementation of the First Ten-Year Plan of the Pan-African organization’s flagship Agenda 2063.
Heads of state are equally set to focus on launching the Second Ten-Year Plan to further the AU’s key objectives.
The summit will also extend to reviewing reports on the activities of the AU Peace and Security Council, alongside the Fourth Review of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program.
