Rabat – Morocco’s “Moussalaha” rehabilitation program, aiming to reintegrate detainees convicted in extremism and terrorism cases, has aided a total of 322 inmates since its inception in 2017.
A recent cohort of 21 more detainees have joined in the latest 14th edition launched at the Sale local prison.
The 13th version of the program saw 22 participants. The Moussalaha Center, established through a partnership agreement last November, has been pivotal in implementing these rehabilitation initiatives.
The launch ceremony for the 14th edition was marked by the presence of a number of high-profile officials including the General Delegate for Penitentiary Administration and Reintegration, Mohamed Saleh Tamek.
The list of attendees equally included Ahmed Abbadi; Secretary-General of the Rabita Mohammadia of Scholars, Amina Bouayach; President of the National Human Rights Council, representatives of institutional partners, as well as experts and trainers.
The Moussalaha program is part of Morocco’s broader efforts to fight against terrorism and religious extremism.
The program relies on a threefold approach focusing on the individual, as well as religion, and the broader society.
Throughout the program, inmates take part in training sessions to educate them on the authentic precepts of Islam, understanding it as a religion of moderation, grounded in openness, and tolerance.
Morocco’s efforts to fend off threats posed by religious extremism and terrorism has attracted international recognition.
In December 2023, the US State Department issued a report lauding the North African country’s approach to countering terrorism.
“The Government of Morocco continues its comprehensive strategy, which includes vigilant security measures, regional and international cooperation, and counter-radicalization policies,” the report read.
The report equally spotlighted Morocco’s efforts to mitigate the risk of terrorism in 2022, explaining that the country made fewer terrorism-related arrests compared to the pre-COVID.
