Rabat – On Monday, Palestinian Wafa news journalist Saher Akram Rayan and his son were killed in an air strike launched by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) in the west of Gaza city.
Wafa news agency released a statement detailing that their correspondent and his son, Anas, were killed whilst attempting to rescue their wounded neighbors at the Haidar Abdel Shari roundabout.
According to the outlet, Rayan was a valued employee of the Wafa news agency, having dedicated 20 years of work to them.
Minister Ahmad Assaf, the General Supervisor of Official Media and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wafa extended his deepest condolences to Rayan’s family.
The news comes in light of the rapidly increasing death toll of Palestinians in Gaza with 32,333 having been killed and 74,694 injured since October 7.
However, the war is not only being waged upon the civilians of Gaza, but also upon the journalists who are reporting from the front line. Rayan is just one of 95 journalists killed in the besieged enclave since the start of the war.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) found in their annual report that 75% of journalists killed in 2023 were Palestinians reporting on IOF’s war on Gaza. They further highlighted that this has made 2023 the deadliest year for the media in almost a decade.
