Rabat – Morocco’s Ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Wednesday to discuss prospects for continued cooperation between the Kingdom and the financial institution.

The focus of the meeting was to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation between Morocco and the IMF, setting the stage for the upcoming spring meetings of the World Bank (WB) and the IMF slated in Washington from April 17 to 19.

The meeting highlights the positive relationship between Morocco and the IMF. Georgieva commended Morocco for its impeccable arrangements during the successful hosting of the Annual Meetings of the WB and the IMF in Marrakech in October 2023.

She lauded the Kingdom’s remarkable economic strides under the stewardship of King Mohammed VI, recognizing Morocco as a beacon of resilience and adept post-crisis management, attributed to targeted governmental interventions.

Ambassador Amrani reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to improving its macroeconomic stability and implementing development strategies across various sectors.

He also emphasized the importance of reforming international financial institutions like the IMF to better represent Africa’s voice and address emerging socio-economic issues.

This working session follows the successful hosting of the 2023 WB-IMF Annual Meetings in Marrakech, a significant achievement for Morocco. Remarkably, the last WB-IMF Annual Meetings held in an African country date back half a century, highlighting the significance of the event for the region.

The meetings, which welcomed over 12,000 global participants, served as a platform for discussing critical global issues.

Against the backdrop of Morocco’s proactive engagement with the IMF, recent developments including a $1.3 billion loan to mitigate climate change effects and multi-year agreements totaling billions under various IMF facilities highlight the country’s commitment to economic resilience and development.

The discussions between Morocco and the IMF reflect a shared desire to strengthen their partnership and promote sustainable, inclusive economic growth in the North African nation.

Morocco’s recent economic strides, coupled with its ongoing collaboration with the IMF, position the country well for future development.
