Rabat – Peruvian officials commended the Atlantic initiative, proposed by King Mohammed VI, aiming to foster cross-continental socio-economic development.
The endorsement came during the seventh edition of the political consultations between the two countries on Friday, which coincided with the sixtieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Peru.
The Atlantic initiative was unveiled during the King’s address marking the 48th anniversary of the Green March in November 2023, and pointed to a significant shift in Morocco’s Atlantic policy.
Consultations between Peruvian and Moroccan officials
Focused on boosting economic integration, the initiative seeks to transform the southern Moroccan city of Dakhla into a regional economic epicenter, boost the regional economy in the Sahel region, and attract foreign investments.
Discussions between Moroccan and Peruvian officials during the meeting reflected a mutual understanding on various regional and international issues, with both countries emphasizing their dedication to peace, stability, and sustainable development.
A focal point of the talks was the formulation of a comprehensive multi-sector roadmap. The roadmap, conceived during the Moroccan-Peruvian political consultations, lays out plans for collaborative initiatives to be executed throughout 2024, with an emphasis on sectoral cooperation.
The agenda covered a wide array of topics crucial to bilateral relations. Special attention was given to enhancing trade and economic ties, fostering technical cooperation in education and culture, and exploring collaboration opportunities in water resources, agricultural research, science, technology, and tourism.
Leading the Moroccan delegation was Fouad Yazough, Ambassador and Director-General of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Accompanying him were Morocco’s Ambassador to Peru, Amin El-Choudary, and Nezha El-Taher, the Director of American Affairs.
On the Peruvian side, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Ignacio Higueras Harry, who was joined by several ministry directors.
