Rabat – President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) Fouzi Lekjaa expressed his desire to hire the services of the new Atlas Lion Brahim Diaz in the Moroccan U23 national team, which will participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics in summer.
In an interview with the Spanish sports daily Marca on Wednesday, Lekjaa talked about Morocco’s sports project for Diaz and his participation in the Olympic Games, saying: “We want Brahim Diaz to be at the Paris Games.”
Aged 24, Diaz would have to participate as one of the three players above the age of 23 who are allowed to be on each men’s team in the Olympic Games.
Spanish football club Real Madrid, where Diaz currently shines, has reportedly prevented its players from participating in the Olympics. This decision has raised concerns about whether Diaz will participate in the Olympics Games.
For his part, journalist Jose Felix Diaz, specialized in sports, recently reported that the club will not allow its players who attend either the European Championship or the Copa America to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris.
In addition, the club does not intend to make any exception and the rule applies for everyone equally. There is no room for the idea to change and it has already been communicated to the players themselves, the journalist explained.
However, this will not be the case for the Malaga-born player since he is not participating in the European Championship or in the Copa America.
Lekjaa, along with the national team’s head coach Walid Regragui, has recently been successful in convincing the Real Madrid striker to represent Morocco after lengthy negotiations. As a result, Diaz will be present in Morocco’s upcoming friendly matches against Angola and Mauritania on March 22 and 26.
The Moroccan U23 football team was drawn in Group B for the Paris Olympics tournament on Wednesday along with Argentina, Ukraine, and a country from Asia yet to qualify. Africa will be represented in the tournament by Egypt, Mali, and Morocco.
