Rabat – A violent turn during a food aid distribution in Gaza early Saturday resulted in the loss of five lives and left at least 30 individuals wounded, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.
The distressing scene unfolded as thousands gathered at the Kuwait roundabout, anticipating the arrival of essential supplies from approximately fifteen trucks.
Eyewitnesses recounted how members of “popular protection committees,” tasked with overseeing the distribution, fired shots into the air, exacerbating the panic among the crowd.
In the midst of the chaos, reports emerged of trucks inadvertently running over people. Additionally, reports suggest that Israeli tanks positioned nearby unleashed what witnesses described as “intense” gunfire, though the intended targets remain unclear.
This tragic incident adds to a series of violent episodes during food aid distributions in Gaza. Just days earlier, six individuals lost their lives in stampedes while attempting to retrieve airdropped parcels, as reported by Hamas authorities.
The Kuwait roundabout has been a focal point for such tragedies, with previous incidents resulting in multiple fatalities.
The Palestinian Health Ministry has previously attributed fatalities during similar distributions to Israeli tank and artillery fire. However, the Israeli army has consistently denied targeting civilians during these operations.
Beyond isolated incidents, Gaza faces a broader humanitarian crisis. With food aid struggling to reach approximately 300,000 residents in the northern part of the strip, urgent appeals have been made for Israel to facilitate access for humanitarian convoys.
The latest figures from the Gaza Health Ministry underscore the severity of the situation, with thousands killed and injured since conflict erupted last year.
The majority of Gaza’s population now confronts the looming specter of famine, exacerbated by shortages of essential resources and inadequate international aid efforts.
