Agadir – Morocco has taken another step in its healthcare reform agenda after a parliamentary committee approved a bill to modernize the legal framework governing the National Order of Physicians.
The Social Sectors Committee in the House of Representatives approved today by majority vote Bill No. 045.26, which amends and supplements Law No. 08.12 governing the National Order of Physicians.
The bill was presented before the committee by Minister of Health and Social Protection Amine Tehraoui, who outlined its main provisions during the parliamentary session.
According to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the proposed legislation is part of the continued implementation of Morocco’s national healthcare reform, in line with the royal directives to improve the governance of health professions and adapt the sector to recent institutional changes.
“The bill forms part of the ongoing implementation of the reform of Morocco’s national healthcare system,” the ministry said, adding that it seeks to strengthen the governance of health professions while supporting the institutional transformation underway across the sector.
The legislation aims to modernize the legal framework governing the National Order of Physicians, reinforce its role in regulating medical practice, and strengthen continuing professional development for doctors.
“The proposed legislation seeks to modernize the legal framework of the National Order of Physicians, strengthen its role in regulating the medical profession, enhance continuing professional development, and expand its regional representation,” the ministry stated.
It also introduces broader regional representation within the order and expands participation to include a wider range of medical professionals, including women physicians, university professors, and researchers, as well as Moroccan doctors practicing abroad.
The ministry said these changes are intended to ensure that the institution better reflects the diversity of Morocco’s medical community while reinforcing its role in overseeing professional standards.
Commenting on the committee’s approval, the ministry said the vote “reflects a spirit of consensus and responsibility” and demonstrates the importance of a participatory approach in advancing Morocco’s healthcare reform.
The ministry added that the reforms are ultimately aimed at serving citizens’ interests by improving the quality of healthcare services throughout the country.
