Rabat – Energy company GE Vernova has invested $10.2 million in Xlinks’ Morocco-UK power project, the company announced in a statement today.
The company’s role is to further accelerate delivery and build-out of the project, the statement added. Xlinks expressed satisfaction with GEVernova’s contribution, describing the company as “well-positioned” to contribute to leading the energy transition.
Xlinks suggested that the project’s wind and solar generation is expected to supply 3.6 gigawatts of clean power as well as delivering approximately 8% of the UK’s current electricity needs.
“ The new electricity generation and battery storage facilities, located in south Morocco, will be connected exclusively to Britain via 4,000km HVDC subsea cables,” the statement said.
The CEO of Vernova, Nomi Ahmad, commented on the company’s contribution, saying that it seeks to help large-scale energy projects ensure deliverability and bankability.
“We are pleased to be part of the Morocco-UK Power Project,” Ahmad added. He said that “collaboration across the energy sector is key to ensuring that more affordable, renewable energy is delivered to help meet the UK’s electrification demands and help the nation meet its net zero goals.”
James Humfrey, CEO of Xlinks First, the investment company established by Xlinks Limited to deliver the power project, stressed that GE Vernova’s contribution to the project represents a “further strategic” step in the development of the Morocco-UK Power Project.
“Xlinks is committed to meeting the UK’s need for reliable, affordable, zero-carbon energy while maximizing the socio-economic benefits of the project in Morocco,” the Xlinks statement quoted Humfrey as saying.
Xlinks emphasized that the project is expected to serve as an opportunity to create jobs as well as training and certification programs.
This would help reinforce Morocco’s renewable expertise as a regional and continental energy hub, the statement added, noting that the project also aims to help address electricity demand in the UK.
“The UK Government has acknowledged the potential of the project and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is developing an outlined business case,” Xlinks concluded.
