Rabat – Today, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, welcomed Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mamadou Tangara, bearing a written message from the President of the Republic of Gambia, Adama Barrow, intended for King Mohammed VI.
During the meeting, Tangara lauded the robust ties between Morocco and Gambia, acknowledging Morocco’s pivotal support, under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, for the forthcoming Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit slated for May 4-5 in the Gambia.
Expressing Gambia’s commitment to collaboration with Morocco, Tangara emphasized the country’s shared aspirations for a prosperous, unified and stable Africa. He underscored the significance of the Royal Initiative for the Atlantic, hailing it as a cornerstone for regional stability and prosperity.
Furthermore, Tangara reiterated Gambia’s steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, including over the Moroccan Sahara.
This meeting follows Tangara’s previous visit in late January. During that visit, both nations, in a joint statement issued at the end of the 3rd session of the Moroccan-Gambian Joint Cooperation Commission, underscored the importance of fostering an environment conducive to mutual investments and leveraging opportunities presented by expanding markets and infrastructures.
The ministers, on that occasion, commended the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, which will provide access to Nigerian gas for at least 15 West African countries, including Gambia.
They also reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across various sectors and emphasized the need to sustain momentum. Priority areas such as investment, industry, trade, fisheries, and renewable energies were highlighted, with Morocco reaffirming its support for Gambia’s National Development Plan.
They mutually agreed to support each other’s candidacies at these levels, with Gambia firmly backing Morocco’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2028-2029.
The ministers expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of their joint commission session, marked by the signing of eleven cooperation agreements. They concluded by planning the fourth session of the Joint Commission, with details to be determined through diplomatic channels.
