Rabat – The Moroccan government has officially approved a MAD 1,000 wage increase for public sector workers within the framework of social dialogue meetings carried out in April.
Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch told the press today that an agreement was reached between the cabinet and trade unions regarding a general increase in the wages of public sector workers who have not benefited from salary reviews.
The increase will be distributed in two consecutive installments. The first installment is scheduled to commence on July 1 of the upcoming year, with the second installment slated to begin on July 1, 2025.
Akhannouch said that the agreement also includes a reduction in income tax for employees, with a monthly impact of up to MAD 400 for middle-income categories, as well as a rise in the minimum wage in the industrial, commercial, and freelance sectors, known as SMIG and agriculture by a new 10% within the same social dialogue round of April.
The increase in the legal minimum wage in nonagricultural activities will be applied in two installments as well. The first will include 5% starting from January 1, 2025, and the second will be from January 1, 2026.
The increase in the legal minimum wage in agricultural activities will also be applied through two installments, the first starting from April next year, and the second from April 2026.
As for income tax system review, this will be applied in January next year by adopting special measures that aim to improve income for the middle class.
In March, Morocco launched a new social dialogue round to address long-standing challenges faced by Moroccan workers.
The government has been emphasizing the importance of the dialogue, noting that there is a strong political will to address a number of issues under negotiation with the unions.
“The government reaffirms the strength of the political will to address the various issues on the table, appreciates the positive cooperation from the unions, and commends the spirit of cooperation and dialogue,” the government spokesperson said last week, adding that “new developments will be discussed at the appropriate time.”
