Marrakech – US House of Representatives’ lawmakers have once more approved a bill potentially paving the way for a nationwide prohibition on TikTok, reigniting substantial jeopardy for the company’s operations in the United States.

Recently, the House voted on a similar matter. Lawmakers approved a bill that would grant TikTok approximately six months to divest.

Failure to comply would result in significant repercussions; the app would be banned from US app stores and from receiving support from “internet hosting services.”

What sets this bill apart are several key factors.

Firstly, there are notable substantive alterations. Instead of a six-month timeframe, TikTok would now have around nine months to comply.

Moreover, this deadline could be extended by the White House for an additional 90 days if President Joe Biden determines progress has been made towards a sale.

The extension of the deadline to as long as a year for TikTok to conclude a forced sale seems to have shifted the political dynamics on Capitol Hill.

Certain influential lawmakers who had previously expressed doubts now voice their support for the bill.

Among them is Washington Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell, who chairs the influential Senate Commerce Committee.

Debates spark on X

On X (formerly Twitter), users have sparked a vigorous debate, expressing both support and opposition, fueling a broader conversation about their stance on this decision.

One X user has chosen to disregard the bill, highlighting the perceived value of TikTok to the United States.

“The US is gonna ‘ban’ Tiktok, they’ll just force China to sell it on the cheap. The US knows how useful TikTok is, they’re not going to ban anything,” stated the user.

Another user said, “The House votes for possible TikTok ban in the US, but don’t expect the app to go away anytime soon.”

This stance suggests a belief that the platform’s utility outweighs concerns raised by legislative efforts to regulate its operations.

As discussions around the bill progress, a segment of users emerge with staunch opposition.

Their stance reflects a divergence of opinions within the online community, illustrating the complexities and varied perspectives surrounding the proposed legislation.

Another user raised a pertinent question, “If the  US is tryna ban TikTok cause they are scared for kids, why not ban Discord instead? It’s 10x unsafer. Or maybe Grindr?”

This comment draws attention to the inconsistency in targeting specific platforms while others with potentially similar or greater safety risks remain unaffected.

For those in favor of the bill, the debate takes on a distinctly different tone and direction.

“Maybe China shouldn’t try to brainwash American Children with that trash that they put in for us. TikTok in China is way different from TikTok in the US. That is what we get is actually banned in China. So yep, I am against bans but in this case, I am pro-ban of TikTok!” a user highlighted.

This user’s tweet encapsulates this viewpoint, highlighting the perceived need to restrict TikTok’s presence in the US due to these differences in content and potential influence.

The debate surrounding the proposed TikTok ban in the United States encompasses a wide range of perspectives and concerns.

While some users express apprehension about the safety and influence of the platform, particularly in relation to children, others highlight broader national security considerations and potential foreign influence.

Only time will tell what will be the fate of TikTok in the US.
