Rabat – The Tangier prosecutor’s office has decided to proceed with the case against a taxi driver who was caught on video assaulting a female passenger.
The incident has sparked public outrage. The driver appeared before the court after his detention was extended for further investigation by the judicial police, according to the news website Le360.
The assault, which occurred on Tuesday, was documented on video by an eyewitness. The footage shows the taxi driver physically assaulting a woman while shouting as he accused her of refusing to pay an additional amount of “one dirham.”
The video went viral online on Tuesday, depicting an outrageous scene of the taxi driver hitting the woman in the middle of a public street near the Tangier train station.
According to reports, the driver was soon arrested and taken into temporary custody following an investigation by the city’s security services. The incident occurred when the driver, operating a small-sized taxi, was transporting the woman from a neighborhood in Tangier to the city center on Saturday.
What started as a verbal altercation quickly escalated into physical violence when the driver reportedly punched the passenger, endangering her safety.
There have been reports that the victim lost consciousness after the attack.
This has sparked even more outrage on social media, with angry commenters demanding that the man be punished according to the level of unspeakable and uncalled-for violence he inflicted on the woman.
