The latest FIFA ranking listed Morocco —a semi-finalist at the 2022 World Cup – as the 13th-best football team worldwide.
This means that Morocco has lost one spot in the global rankings; the North African country was in 12th position in the previous FIFA rankings in February.
This slight drop could be attributed to Morocco’s performances in the friendly games, where the Atlas Lions struggled to beat Angola 1-0 and failed to score against Mauritania in a goalless draw.
With the 2025 AFCON on the horizon, the underwhelming performances have raised concerns among the Atlas Lions fans, who are eager to see Morocco make up for their recent AFCON disappointment by winning the continental tournament on home soil.
Despite the latest AFCON setback in Cote d’Ivoire, Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF) renewed its trust in head coach Walid Regragui.
However, there have been converging reports that the federation called for an urgent meeting with the coach to discuss the Atlas Lions’ performance during their recent friendly games.
Regragui acknowledged that the performance was poor, noting: “We can’t be pleased with this performance, particularly in the first half of the game …we needed to be more clinical in such games.”
Fans still have high hopes for the Moroccan national team following their outstanding performance at the 2022 World Cup, where they made history as the first Arab and African country to reach the semifinals of the global tournament.
But the team’s latest performances have deepened the frustration of a number of fans, dividing sentiments among those who still want Regragui to coach the Atlas Lions and critics who have been taking issue with his team’s poor AFCON performance.
Despite dropping one place, Morocco remains the top African team in the FIFA rankings, followed by Senegal, Nigeria, Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Algeria, and Mali.
