Rabat – Several provinces in Morocco are set to experience heatwaves from Thursday to Saturday, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
In an orange-level alert, DGM says that temperatures are predicted to soar between 34 and 39°C. The list of provinces affected includes Fquih Ben Salah, Beni Mellal, Settat, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Rehamna, Marrakech, and Azilal.
The heatwave is also set to extend to Al Haouz, Youssoufia, Chichaoua, Taroudant, Tata, Tan-Tan, Guelmim, Sidi Ifni, Assa-Zag, Tarfaya, Laâyoune, Boujdour, Es-Smara, and Oued Eddahab.
The same temperatures will be felt on Friday in the provinces of Kenitra, Sidi Slimane, Sidi Kacem, Skhirate-Temara, Khemisset, Sale, Rabat, El Jadida, Sidi Bennour, Nouaceur, Mohammadia, Mediouna, Benslimane, Berrechid, Casablanca, Safi, Essaouira, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Inezgane-Ait Melloul, and Tiznit.
According to the official weather bulletin, temperatures are expected to vary from 34 to 38°C in Oujda-Angad, Berkane, Driouch, Nador, Guercif, and Taourirt on both Friday and Saturday.
The heatwave comes on the heels of heavy rainfall which caused floods in a number of cities in Northern Morocco, resulting in rescue operations as people were trapped in their houses.
On the upside, however, the rainfall has revitalized Morocco’s water reservoir, causing multiple dams to reach 100% filling rates. However, this has only alleviated Morocco’s water shortage problem slightly, as the national dam filling rate remains low at only 30%.
