Rabat – Morocco’s High Council of Ulemas announced on Tuesday that the official value of Zakat for Al Fitr for 2024 is MAD 20 ($1.9).
Zakat Al Fitr is intended to help disadvantaged communities. The council emphasized that this charitable contribution should be given in the form of staple food items commonly consumed by the local populace, such as wheat, barley, or similar provisions.
According to the teachings of Prophet Mohammed, the recommended quantity of Zakat Al Fitr is approximately 2.5 kilograms of grain or flour per person.
The council further advised that donations should be made two to three days prior to Eid Al Fitr, which is expected to fall on April 10 this year. It also suggested that individuals who prefer may offer the equivalent value in cash.
While the prescribed value is set at MAD 20, the council encouraged those with the means to contribute beyond this amount, citing a verse from Surah Al Baqarah that praises voluntary acts of generosity.
The obligation of Zakat Al Fitr primarily rests upon the head of the household, who oversees the financial affairs of the family. It is their responsibility to ensure that all family members, including children, fulfill this religious duty.
However, only adult Muslims possessing the minimum amount of wealth, known as Nisab in Islamic jurisprudence, are obligated to make this contribution.
The overarching goal of Zakat Al Fitr is to facilitate the participation of all Muslims in the joyous festivities of Eid Al Fitr, regardless of their financial circumstances.
By adhering to this obligation, individuals uphold a key pillar of Islamic charity and solidarity, fostering a sense of community and compassion during this sacred period.
