Rabat – Morocco’s Civil Protection officers have conducted over 150 emergency intervention operations, in close coordination with local authorities, in response to the aftermath of significant rains that poured on the northern Moroccan cities Tangier, Tetouan, and Larache.
According to the local press Le360, the torrential rains that fell from Sunday morning to the early hours of Monday caused road closures and an increase in Oued levels in the northern region of the country.
The Civil Protection efforts targeted various neighborhoods and areas in the three cities, where severe flooding was observed. A swift action was taken to evacuate residents who were blocked off by the water after widespread flooding was reported south of Tetouan and along the road leading to Tangiers.
Based on data from Le360, around ten rescue missions were conducted by Civil Protection units, providing assistance to twenty-three people. Several animals were also rescued, including six cows, sheep, and goats found trapped in a drowned barn. In addition, five cars were relocated to a safe area.
The town of Martil, northeast of Tetouan, was also affected by the rising Oued and needed the help of the Civil Protection to make it easier to navigate the flooded streets and alleyways.

As a result of blocked drainage systems, severe rains in Tangier resulted in extensive flooding and the spread of unpleasant smells. In a number of Tangier neighborhoods, including Mesnana, Hay Al Ousra, El Aouama, and Bni Makada, several measures were taken to lower the water levels.
To address the effects of the rain on houses and infrastructure in Larache, about thirteen interventions took place. Advanced methods were employed to remove accumulated water, allowing various impacted areas, including the industrial sector, which had been impacted by water infiltration, to return to normal.
In Tetouan, units of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima regional Civil Protection rescued thirteen residents of the Sahtryine rural commune on Sunday, after their homes were submerged in water due to the flooding.
