Rabat – Head of government Aziz Akhannouch is representing King Mohammed VI on Tuesday at the inauguration ceremony of Senegal’s President-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Akhannouch is attending the inauguration ceremony along with a Moroccan delegation, that includes Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.
According to state media MAP, King Mohammed VI is the only head of state to have received an invitation to attend the ceremony apart from leaders of the sub-region.
This demonstrates the depth of the unbreakable bonds and strong cooperation between Morocco and Senegal, added the same source.
Several officials are attending the ceremony, including presidents of the commissions of the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS), and the West African Economic and Monetary Union.
Faye was sworn in today ending political turmoil and concerns that former President Macky Sall would try to extend his mandate into a third term.
Diomaye Faye, however, won the election to become the youngest president in the country’s history.
“Before God and the Senegalese nation, I swear to faithfully fulfill the office of president of the P Republic of Senegal,” Faye said in the inauguration ceremony that took place in Diamniadio, near Dakar.
The new Senegalese president also vowed to defend the integrity of the territory and national independence and emphasized commitment to spare no effort to achieve African unity.
Senegal is one of the African countries with which Morocco shares good diplomatic ties based on political dialogue and exchange of visits.
Senegal is also one of the countries that support Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
Notably, the country is one of which has opened consulates in Morocco’s southern provinces to reflect its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
