Oracle, a global leader in information technology, has announced the launch of two Oracle Cloud regions in Morocco.

The company made the announcement today on the sidelines of the second edition of GITEX Africa Morocco, the largest tech and startups show in Africa

Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, the Ministry of Investment, the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development, and Oracle signed the partnership in anticipation of the upcoming opening of the cloud regions.

With this agreement, Oracle will become the first hyperscaler to establish public cloud regions in North Africa, supporting Morocco’s digital initiatives and fostering innovation across the continent.

The cloud regions seek to contribute to accelerating the implementation of Morocco’s digital government initiatives, offering high-performance cloud services and security to organizations across Africa.

The planned regions will aim to allow customers and partners to benefit from access to cloud services, enabling them to drive better value from their data.

These regions will also look to leverage redundancy and disaster recovery capabilities, improve business continuity, and comply with Moroccan regulations and data residency requirements.

“The opening of Oracle’s public cloud in Morocco will accelerate digital transformation across the region,” said Ghita Mezzour, Morocco’s Delegate Minister for Digital Transition.

With a hyperscaler like Oracle, this strategic expansion positions Morocco as a unique player in the region, she said, adding that this will allow for even more dynamic skills development and growth opportunities.

Mohcine Jazouli, Delegate Minister for Investment, described Oracle’s investment in Morocco as important and reflecting “strong confidence in the expertise and talent of Moroccan youth.”

The opening of Oracle cloud regions emphasizes Morocco’s commitment to promoting technological progress in the country, Jazouli added, noting that the initiative also positions the North African country as a key player on the digital scene.

Oracle’s Technology Executive President for the EMEA region, Richard Smith, also commented on the signing, describing Morocco as a hub of opportunities for businesses looking to accelerate their expansion by deploying the latest digital technologies.

“The upcoming Oracle Cloud regions will offer new solutions to organizations, thereby enhancing their resilience and exploring new markets to accelerate growth,” Smith stressed.

The signing of the agreement today comes after Oracle and the ministry of Digital Transition signed a partnership deal earlier this month to launch a research and development center in Morocco.

According to the two parties, the center’s goal is to create 1,000 high-value-added jobs for Moroccan engineers and researchers. It will also contribute to the development of cloud solutions and AI technologies for Oracle’s global clients, they stressed in a statement.
