Rabat – The African Development Bank (AfDB) has unveiled a strategic roadmap to support Morocco’s ambitious development goals for the next five years.
Approved by the AfDB’s Board of Directors, the Country Strategy Paper (CSP) aligns with the Kingdom’s new development model through 2035, aiming to bolster economic competitiveness, resilience, and social inclusion.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the long-standing partnership between Morocco and the AfDB. “This new strategy sets the course for our investments in Morocco, our main partner on the continent,” stated Achraf Tarsim, the AfDB’s Country Manager for Morocco in a press release on the announcement. With over €12 billion mobilized in strategic sectors already, the AfDB aims to propel Morocco towards its vision of emergence.
The new roadmap prioritizes two key areas: fostering inclusive growth through enhanced skills development, employability and entrepreneurship, as well as strengthening the Moroccan economy’s resilience to external shocks by investing in sustainable infrastructure.
Notably, the AfDB highlights an innovative “water-energy nexus” approach, promoting integrated projects that address water scarcity while driving robust and inclusive growth.
This strategy builds upon the successes of the previous CSP (2017-2023). During that period, the AfDB played a crucial role in Morocco’s development, mobilizing nearly 3 billion euros for projects ranging from water desalination and healthcare infrastructure upgrades to expanded social safety nets and improved transportation networks.
These efforts resulted in tangible improvements, with millions of Moroccaans gaining access to clean drinking water and health insurance coverage reaching 100% by 2023.
The AfDB’s commitment to Morocco extends far beyond the CSP. As a founding member of the Bank, Morocco has benefited from over €12 billion in investments across nearly 190 projects since 1978.
The current active portfolio encompasses 40 ongoing operations totaling 3.5 billion euros, spanning sectors like health, water, agriculture, transport, energy, and finance.
The 2024 AfDB Annual Meetings, themed “Transforming Africa, the African Development Bank Group, and the Reform of the Global Financial Architecture,” provide a fitting backdrop for this renewed partnership.
