Rabat – Morocco’s national futsal team fell into Group E in the 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cup draw on Sunday.
Group E also contains Morocco, Portugal, Tajikistan, and Panama.
The Moroccan team clinched the sixth spot in the inaugural FIFA Futsal Men’s World Rankings this year.
Morocco’s journey to the top echelons of futsal has been marked by several standout victories. A significant triumph was their dominant performance in the Arab Futsal Cup final in June 2023, where they overpowered Kuwait with a resounding 7-1 victory.
In addition, the team stunned the futsal world with a decisive 7-0 win against Argentina in a friendly match, showcasing their formidable capabilities.
Their latest accolade came just last month when Morocco secured the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Futsal title, defeating Angola 5-1 in the finals.
The victory, achieved on home soil, marked Morocco’s third AFCON title, following previous wins in 2016 and 2020. Throughout the tournament, the Atlas Lions displayed exceptional skill and remained unbeaten, further solidifying their reputation.
As they prepare for the 2024 Futsal World Cup in Uzbekistan, Morocco’s futsal team had a year of extraordinary accomplishments.
FIFA has lauded the team’s meteoric rise, saying that “Morocco’s ascent has been nothing short of meteoric. They destroyed Kuwait 7-1 in the Arab Futsal Cup final, handed Argentina a 7-0 beatdown in a friendly, escaped the entire 2023 unbeaten, and conquered the Futsal AFCON 2024 in scintillating style.”
Joining Morocco in the top ranks are futsal giants Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Iran, and Argentina. Brazil leads the FIFA Futsal rankings, followed by Portugal in second place, Spain in third, Iran in fourth, and Argentina in fifth.
Morocco’s impressive sixth-place ranking puts them ahead of other notable teams like Russia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and France.
