Beni Mellal – In the latest episode of Algeria’s ongoing hostile campaign against Morocco, the Algerian Minister of Irrigation, Taha Derbal, has accused the Kingdom of deliberately draining water from dams and regions along Algeria’s western border.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, Derbal claimed that Morocco’s “irresponsible behavior” has disrupted the ecological balance, severely impacting flora and fauna in the area.
The Algerian minister, without directly naming Morocco, alleged that the neighboring country is systematically and intentionally drying up certain dams and zones. He called for strong international action against such practices and also emphasized that Algeria has mobilized significant resources to address water scarcity and ensure water supply for its citizens.
These measures include the desalination of seawater and the recycling of treated wastewater for agricultural purposes.
Derbal further stated that the forum provides an opportunity to highlight Algeria’s concerns, particularly along its western border, where he accused Morocco of engaging in “ecological looting.” He claimed that Algeria has taken necessary measures but wants the world to be aware of these practices.
This is not the first time Algerian media, closely linked to the military junta, has targeted Morocco with such accusations. Television channels have repeatedly broadcasted reports along the western border, alleging that Morocco is siphoning off Algeria’s water resources.
During the forum, Derbal boycotted the speech of the Moroccan Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and the awarding of the 8th Hassan II Great World Water Prize to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The Algerian minister declared that his country intends to raise these concerns on a global scale to raise awareness and develop a rigorous plan to limit the aggravation of the neighboring country’s practices.
