Rabat – Morocco has reclaimed a collection of 117 rare fossils from Chile, with origins dating back a staggering 400 million years. The handover ceremony took place in Santiago on Monday.

The fossils had been confiscated by Chilean customs officials between 2017 and 2022. On Monday, they were formally returned to Morocco during a ceremony attended by a number of high-profile officials from both countries, including the Moroccan ambassador to Santiago, Kenza El Ghali, and officials from the Chilean National Heritage Service and Customs Department.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nelida Pozo Kudo, Director of the Chilean National Heritage Service, emphasized the importance of cooperation between Morocco and Chile in safeguarding valuable scientific artifacts.

She explained that the seizure and subsequent restitution of these fossils exemplify the commitment of both countries to combat illicit trade in cultural goods, in accordance with international law.

Irwin Brevis, Technical Secretary of the Chilean Council of National Monuments, expressed satisfaction at the successful repatriation of the fossils, highlighting their historical significance.

He noted that these ancient artifacts predate the formation of continents, reflecting their immense scientific and cultural value.

On his part, Ambassador Kenza El Ghali extended gratitude to Chilean authorities for their collaboration over the past five years in recovering these fossils of Moroccan heritage.

She drew attention to the severity of illegal antiquities smuggling, likening it to drug trafficking, and urged for stringent penalties against offenders.

The return of the fossils to Morocco was hailed as a symbol of historical ties and genuine friendship between the two nations. Ambassador El Ghali expressed optimism for the future of bilateral relations, citing this cooperative effort as a testament to shared values and mutual respect.

Prior to the ceremony, the two sides signed an agreement on documentary heritage cooperation.
