Rabat – Morocco is set to embark on the construction of a new railway line connecting the cities of Casablanca and Beni Mellal via Khouribga, the Moroccan news agency MAP reported today.

The announcement was made during a meeting between Khatib El Hebil, the Wali of the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region, and Mohamed Rabie Khlie, the Director General of the National Railway Office (ONCF).

Officials from ONCF, alongside regional and local authorities, discussed various proposed routes for the Khouribga-Beni Mellal railway project and its associated financial costs.

The meeting was also an opportunity to evaluate preliminary studies and consider proposals that would ensure the effectiveness of the project for the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region.

Both parties agreed to expedite the commencement of construction as they anticipated significant socio-economic benefits for the region and its inhabitants.

The project aims to enhance connectivity and transportation infrastructure between major cities in Morocco by facilitating the movement of goods and passengers.

It is expected to contribute to regional development and economic growth, particularly in the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region.

The Beni Mellal-Khenifra region is located in central Morocco. Beni Mellal, the administrative center of the region, is known for its agricultural production, particularly citrus fruits and olives.

In addition to the Casablanca-Beni Mellal projects, Morocco has other plans to further expand its railway network.

This includes the Kentira-Marrakech high-speed rail project. The 375-kilometer line connecting the two cities aims to revolutionize travel by reducing travel times and increasing efficiency.

The Kentira-Marrakech high-speed rail project is part of Morocco’s broader national rail plan, which aims to interconnect cities, ports, and airports through high-speed rail links. By 2040, the government aims to provide 80% of the country’s population with access to railway transportation, up from the current 50%.
