ILO Director-General Lauds Morocco’s Social Policies During Visit

Rabat – The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, lauded Morocco’s efforts in implementing robust social policies during his visit to the country on Monday.

In a press statement in Rabat, Houngbo commended the Moroccan experience, particularly in social welfare.

“It was entirely normal for us to make this visit given Morocco’s very important role at the ILO,” Houngbo said. “I want to emphasize our satisfaction with the Moroccan experience, particularly in the context of the social state.”

Houngbo also shed light on Morocco’s practical approach to social protection and inclusivity.

“Here in Morocco, we see practical implementation, whether it’s in terms of social protection, universalization of this social protection, targeting the most disadvantaged communities, etc,” he stated.

In addition, the ILO director praised the Moroccan government’s efforts to raise the guaranteed minimum wage (SMIG) to “quite significant” levels and enhance social dialogue.

“The social dialogue, which culminated in the historic signing on Monday, April 29, is another example of the importance that the ILO rightly attaches to these efforts of the Moroccan government,” he emphasized.

On his part, Younes Sekkouri, the Minister of Economic Inclusion highlighted the importance of Houngbo’s visit, especially following recent agreements and initiatives aimed at bolstering social welfare in Morocco.

“We have serious government work to implement this Royal Vision with tangible and concrete results,” Sekkouri stated, referring to Morocco’s commitment to social development under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.

Sekkouri also praised Morocco’s exemplary model, saying: “The Moroccan model is an exemplary one for Southern countries and even on a global scale… Morocco, thanks to the Royal Vision, enters the social state with great ambitions, but above all with great achievements.”

Houngbo’s visit included meetings with various ministers and officials, as well as taking part in high-level events focusing on social justice and the labor market.
