While his club, France’s Paris Saint-Germain, lost the first leg of their Champions League semifinal against Germany’s Dortmund last night, Moroccan right-back Achraf Hakimi reached a personal milestone.
With his 10th appearance in this Champions League campaign (1 goal, 1 assist), the right-back not only surpassed his previous best of 8 matches across two editions but also overtook his compatriot Hakim Ziyech as the Moroccan player with the most appearances in this prestigious European competition.
The Madrid-born player has now set a new record for Moroccan players in the Champions League, eclipsing the previous mark of 44 appearances held by Noureddine Naybet. Ziyech closely trails with 45 appearances.
At just 25 years old, Hakimi has outpaced Ziyech, who is 31, to become the Moroccan player with the most Champions League appearances, a feat he achieved following Ziyech’s appearance for Galatasaray in their 1-0 loss to Copenhagen on December 12th.
Hakimi still has the opportunity to further extend his record as he is set to feature in the upcoming semi-final second leg game and potentially in the final with PSG.
Furthermore, the right-back stands on the verge of becoming the most capped player in the history of the Moroccan national team, having already earned 75 caps for his coutry.
