Rabat – The African Summit on Fertilizers and Soil Health (AFSH) kicked off on Thursday in Nairobi with the participation of several countries, including Morocco.
Representing King Mohammed VI, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, is leading the Moroccan delegation at the summit.
The Moroccan delegation includes high-ranking officials such as Mohamed Methqal; Ambassador and Director-General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, Mohamed Arrouchi; Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the African Union (AU) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and Abderrazzak Laassel; Ambassador of Morocco to Kenya.
Organized by the African Union, the summit is taking place between May 7 and 9 under the theme “Listen to the Land”. It aims to address soil health, fertilizer use, and sustainable agricultural practices across the continent.
The summit involves discussions among various stakeholders, including policymakers, scientists, farmers and private-sector representatives, to find long-term solutions to food and nutrition deficiencies in Africa, said the African Union in a press release.
Key topics include soil nutrient management, climate change impact, regenerative practices, and the implementation of previous commitments made by African leaders to boost agricultural productivity.
The event will also review and discuss the Nairobi Declaration, which is expected to be adopted by Heads of State and Government on May 9.
The declaration aims to outline commitments and strategies to address soil health, fertilizer use, and sustainable agricultural practices in Africa.
This includes a 10-year Fertilizer Action Plan that is set to be formulated as part of the outcomes of the AFSH summit. According to the press release, this plan “will mark a pivotal stride towards a green revolution across Africa, laying the groundwork for an agricultural renaissance.”
