Beni Mellal – Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is reportedly considering allowing their star right-back Achraf Hakimi to participate in the Olympic tournament at the Paris 2024 Games this summer.
The French sports daily L’Équipe reported on Tuesday that the club is open to letting the 25-year-old Moroccan international represent his country at the Olympics.
Unlike some of his PSG teammates, such as Bradley Barcola and Warren Zaïre-Emery who are selected to represent France at the European Championship, Hakimi does not have any international commitments this summer apart from the Olympics.
PSG’s new coach Luis Enrique had previously stated that decisions regarding player participation in the Olympics would be made on a case-by-case basis, considering the best interests of both the club and the player.
Hakimi, who has already represented Morocco in two World Cups and three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, sees the Olympic Games as a unique opportunity that he wants to experience at least once in his career.
The defender, who has earned 75 caps for his country, has expressed his desire to play in the Olympic football tournament, which will run from July 24 to August 9.
By granting Hakimi permission to play in the Olympics, PSG aims to strengthen their relationship with the player, whose contract runs until 2026. Despite the impending departure of his close friend Kylian Mbappé, Hakimi has expressed his attachment to the Parisian club.
This news will come as a boost to Morocco’s Olympic team coach Tarik Sektioui, who will have one of the country’s most prominent players at his disposal. Sektioui will now focus on selecting the other two players over the age of 23 who can strengthen the Olympic squad.
