Rabat – Morocco has emerged as one of the top 10 strawberry producers in the world for 2024, according to a recent report of the World Population Review.
The country’s annual production of 166,955 tonnes places it firmly among global leaders in strawberry cultivation, reflecting its growing prominence in the agricultural sector.
Strawberries are widely popular, and global demand for the fruit is on the rise. The leading producers of the fruit are China, the United States, and Egypt.
In 2023, China maintained its position as the largest producer, with a yield of 3,336,690 tonnes, as reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The United States followed in second place with 1,055,963 tonnes, while third place holder Egypt produced 597,029 tonnes. Other top producers include Turkiye, Spain, Brazil, Russia, Poland, and Morocco.
Experts highlight that increased strawberry cultivation is driven by the fruit’s rising global demand. However, they also caution that unpredictable weather and extreme climate events can impact yields, often leading to supply shortages.
Strawberries, an extremely delicate fruit, require meticulous handling and immediate refrigeration post-harvest to maintain quality during transportation.
The majority of China’s strawberry production is concentrated in the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, and Liaoning.
In the United States, California dominates production, contributing 90% of the national total, with the remainder coming from Florida, Oregon, North Carolina, and Michigan. Egypt’s main strawberry-growing regions include Ismailia, Beheira, and Qaluobia.
Strawberry ripening seasons vary geographically. In temperate northern hemisphere zones, strawberries typically ripen in early summer.
However, equatorial regions benefit from extended growing seasons, allowing for year-round strawberry availability, provided there is adequate transport and refrigeration infrastructure.
For instance, Mexican strawberries are available to consumers in the northern United States throughout the winter months.
Morocco’s inclusion in the top 10global strawberry producers marks a significant milestone for the country’s agricultural sector.
Despite the challenges posed by climate variability and logistical demands, Moroccan strawberries are expected to meet international standards and contribute to the global market, providing consumers worldwide with this beloved fruit.
