Essouira’s Gnaoua Festival Celebrates 25 Years

Casablanca – As part of its 25th birthday, the Gnaoua World Music Festival  will turn the historic town of Essaouira into a captivating stage for traditional and contemporary performances this week, from June 27 to June 29. 

The event promises to attract art lovers from the whole globe, immersing them into the mesmerizing rhythms and spiritually legacy of the Gnaoua people. 

For two and a half decades, the Gnaoua Festival has brought music, art, and culture to Morocco. 

This year, the Gnaoua Festival marks its silver jubilee, with an exciting lineup of music, dance, food, and activities, for three successive days, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

The festival hasn’t always been this big. Starting first as a small local event, over the years, it has grown into a huge international celebration. 

The festival will feature prominent Moroccan Gnaoua artists such as Maâlem Hamid El Kasri, Maâlem Hassan Boussou, Maâlem Abdelkebir Merchane, and Maâlem Mustapha Baqbou, among others. 

These artists are known for their deep connection to the spiritual and musical legacy of the Gnawa culture, bringing authentic melodies to the festival.

Joining them are world-renowned artists like Buika from Spain, Snarky Puppy from the US,  Alune Wade from Senegal, and Amazigh Kateb from Algeria. These international performers will infuse the festival with diverse musical styles, creating a dynamic and amazing atmosphere. 

Additionally, the festival will feature exciting fusion performances, blending Gnaoua music with other genres, featuring collaborations with artists such as Guimba Kouyaté from Mali, Kike Perdomo from Spain, and Jon Grandcamp from France.

Each performer will add their  own touch and unique flavor to the event, combining traditional sounds with modern vibes to make the festival a fusion of diverse musical experiences.

Moreover, music will not be the only highlight of the event. 

 According to the press release, the festival will also showcase dance, art, and food from different cultures. Plus, the audience can enjoy a great deal of artistic performances, from captivating dance moves to amazing visual art displays.

As Morocco celebrates 25 years of Essouira’s iconic festival,  it is a time to reflect on the good this tradition has brought in elevating the country’s cultural gem of Gnaoua music. 

For those flocking to Essaouira tomorrow, this 25th anniversary will surely be one to remember. The festival itself is free, but those wishing to purchase VIP passes or access to exclusive side concerts can still grab tickets at the festival’s main store onsite .
