Rabat – Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry announced today the appointment of 15 new Consuls General across various countries, marking a quarter of all consular positions.
This move comes as part of the ministry’s 2024 personnel mobility initiative, aimed at enhancing diplomatic outreach and efficiency.
A third of the newly appointed Consuls General are women, boosting the overall representation of female Consuls General to 40%, the ministry explained in a statement.
The increase reflects a growing trend towards gender diversity within diplomatic leadership, which has seen a steady rise from 28% in 2022 to 40% this year.
The appointments also reflect a strategy to promote from within, with 20% of the positions filled by Consuls General who have successfully completed previous assignments and are now taking on new consular roles.
According to the ministry, 20% of the newly appointed Consuls General bring valuable experience from central service or diplomatic missions.
There is a deliberate effort to balance youthful vigor with veteran experts, as 60% of those appointed as Consuls General are entering the role for the first time.
Statistics show that a significant majority, 67%, have prior experience serving in consular posts.
Meanwhile, 33% of the appointees come from diverse backgrounds within the field of diplomacy.
Morocco has a strong diplomatic representation around the world. As of 2019, the country had 97 embassies, 59 consulates, and 75 honorary consuls, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
It also has 4 diplomatic missions in New York, Geneva, Paris, and Brussels.
Despite its robust diplomatic network around the world, Morocco remains underrepresented in East and Southern Africa, Central Asia, and Oceania, according to a report from the Royal Institute of Strategic Studies.
