Comoros President Azali Assoumani has thanked Morocco for supporting his country’s successful accession to the World Trade Organization ( WTO).
Comoros joined the WTO in February.
In comments he made today, Assoumani expressed his gratitude for Morocco’s involvement and unwavering commitment to the success of the process.
The Comorian president made his remarks during a meeting with the Director General of the WTO, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala.
He said that this accession will contribute to boosting the openness of his country’s economy and its integration into regional, continental, and global value chains.
This development will also promote the diversification of international trade exchanges, noting that Comoros desires to benefit from Morocco’s support in the post-accession phase, Assumani stressed.
Assoumani also said he hopes for his country to benefit from Morocco’s expertise, particularly in the renewable energy sector.
This, according to him, would provide his country with reliable energy sources to stimulate economic growth and promote the transformation, increasing their added value during export.
Comoros is keen to draw inspiration from Morocco’s achievements in a wide range of sectors, notably including tourism, to boost the country’s foreign direct investments and improve its overall economic performance.
Morocco’s ambassador and permanent representative to Geneva, Omar Zineber, welcomed the Comorian president’s positive remarks, highlighting the significance of Comoros’ WTO accession and noting Morocco’s unwavering support of its African causes on the global stage.
He said that the country’s WTO accession reflects the importance of integrating Least Developed Countries into the multilateral trading system and fostering international trade relations based on transparency, fairness, and inclusivity to support the development goals of member countries and strengthen WTO’s credibility.
