Rabat – King Mohammed VI has granted his royal pardon to 1,484 individuals convicted by different courts across Morocco on the occasion of Eid Al Adha.
In a statement, the Ministry of Justice said the beneficiaries of the royal gesture include 114 detainees who were granted a pardon on the remaining term of their imprisonment or confinement.
About 1,094 detainees benefited from the reduction of imprisonment or confinement sentences while one detainee benefited from his life sentence being moved to a fixed-term sentence.
The recipients of the royal pardon who benefited from total freedom included pardon on the imprisonment sentence or its remainder for 69 individuals, while six individuals were granted pardon on the imprisonment sentence with retention of their fine.
189 individuals were granted pardons on the fine sentence, while nine individuals were granted pardons on both imprisonment and fine sentences.
Two individuals were pardoned on the fine sentence and the remainder of the imprisonment sentence.
This comes as Morocco celebrates Eid al-Adha today, one of the most sacred religious events in the Islamic calendar. Many countries celebrate the religious festival on Sunday, including Saudi Arabia.
On Saturday, King Mohammed VI sent his congratulatory messages to the leaders of the global Muslim community, expressing his greetings and best wishes.
In return, the Moroccan monarch received a message of congratulations and best wishes from the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Hussein Ibrahim Taha on Eid Al Adha.
The King also received a message of congratulations from the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit on the occasion of Eid Al Adha.
