Rabat – The health of our oceans is a pressing concern, and innovative solutions are crucial in the fight to protect them. This year, the first-ever OceanLove Innovation Award, a global initiative by the ocean conservation non-profit OceanLove, offered a platform for creative minds worldwide to present their ideas.

The Award garnered submissions from 38 countries, showcasing the strong international commitment to ocean conservation.

Among the top contenders were ten innovative ideas from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and South Africa, showcasing a diverse array of solutions to protect marine ecosystems.

Leading the panel of judges was Sian Owen, Executive Director of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition, alongside a distinguished group of scientists and activists from eight countries. They were tasked with selecting standout entries that demonstrated exceptional promise in tackling oceanic challenges.

One standout submission was the brainchild of Moroccan innovator Saad Abid: The Chbika micro-waste tool. Designed to combat micro-waste on beaches, this innovative device captured the judges’ attention for its simplicity, effectiveness, and potential for global scalability.

“The Chbika stood out for its originality, impact, and potential for scalability,” said Sian Owen, Executive Director of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition and chair of the esteemed judging panel.

The Chbika not only addresses immediate environmental concerns but also serves as an educational tool, raising awareness among local communities and beachgoers about marine pollution.

Its recognition underscores Morocco’s growing role in global environmental innovation, offering a replicable model for coastal communities worldwide.

The competition’s rigorous evaluation process began with the selection of twenty promising ideas, which underwent an intensive online bootcamp to refine their impact and scalability.

Now, as anticipation builds towards the OceanLove Innovation Award Ceremony scheduled for June 19, finalists await the announcement of the top five ideas and the overall winner.

The ceremony is part of the Oceanovation Festival, and it promises to be a pivotal event in the ocean conservation community. Keynote speaker Liz Taylor, president of DOER Marine and daughter of marine biologist Sylvia Earle, will preside over the awards presentation, where winners will receive grants to further develop their projects.

Ilco Van der Linde, founder of OceanLove, emphasized the Award’s role in fostering innovation and optimism in ocean conservation efforts. “All change begins with an idea,” he remarked, underscoring the Award’s mission to prioritize innovation and practical solutions over mere rhetoric.

Endorsed by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the OceanLove Innovation Award aligns closely with UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, highlighting its pivotal role in advancing global efforts to conserve marine resources.
