Beni Mellal – The highly anticipated 25th edition of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival is set to open this week on June 27, in the coastal city of Essaouira.

Morocco World News has received a press release detailing the festival’s exciting program, which promises to bring together over 400 artists from 14 countries across 53 concerts, along with a variety of cultural events and activities.

The festival’s opening will be marked by two spectacular events. The traditional opening parade will showcase all the brotherhoods marching together, led by the Gnaoua Maâlems, winding its way through the streets of Essaouira.

Following the parade, an unprecedented musical fusion concert will celebrate the trans-Atlantic brotherhood, featuring musicians and dancers from Morocco, Brazil, and the Ivory Coast.

This unique performance will bring together three musical genres enshrined on UNESCO’s list of intangible culture: Gnaoua, Flamenco, and Zaouli.

The concert will include performances by renowned artists such as Maâlem Hassan Boussou, Maâlem Moulay Tayeb Dehbi, the Brazilian percussionist ensemble Ilê Aiyê, La Compagnie Dumanlé from the Ivory Coast, and the flamenco duo of dancer Nino de Los Reyes and percussionist Sergio Martinez.

The fusion of rhythms and styles is expected to be a highlight of the festival’s history, offering a truly musical and visual experience.

In addition to the concerts, the festival will feature a human rights forum, a training program in collaboration with Berklee College of Music, round table sessions on Gnaoua culture, and a major exhibition showcasing Moroccan visual artists.

The festival’s program has been carefully curated to offer a wide spectrum of musical genres and artists, with an audacious, bold, and inclusive approach.

Organizers expect to welcome more than 400,000 festivalgoers from over forty countries around the world and across Morocco. The Gnaoua and World Music Festival continues to be a significant event in Morocco’s cultural calendar, celebrating the rich heritage of Gnaoua music while fostering cross-cultural exchanges and collaborations.
