Rabat – For more than eight months, over 625,000 children in Gaza have been deprived of education due to the ongoing conflict, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reported on Friday.
Among them, 300,000 were enrolled in UNRWA schools before the hostilities began, underscoring the widespread disruption of educational activities in the region.
UNRWA emphasized the critical role of recreational and educational programs in preparing children to return to school and reclaim their right to education.
These activities are seen as essential to mitigating the long-term psychological and developmental impacts on Gaza’s youth, who are enduring severe trauma.
The agency’s June report painted a grim picture of life in Gaza, describing the relentless bombings, forced displacement, and dire shortages of food, water, and educational opportunities as a “never-ending nightmare.”
This continuous state of emergency is inflicting profound psychological damage on an entire generation, the report noted.
Tlaleng Mofokeng, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health, expressed grave concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. During the 56th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Mofokeng described the conditions as genocidal.
“Many people have been literally wiped out in the Gaza Strip,” she stated, calling for international recognition of the crisis as a genocide.
The UN official stressed the urgency of documenting the atrocities and holding those responsible accountable. She noted the significant challenges in rebuilding Gaza’s health infrastructure, which has been decimated by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) merciless war.
Since 7 October 2023, the IOF has been waging a never-ending war on Gaza that has left more than 37,765 people dead and 86,429 wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, against a backdrop of massive destruction and famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children.
