Rabat – As Israel’s Occupation Forces (IOF) continue their genocidal war on Gaza, the United Nations has signaled its preparedness to deploy a police force in Gaza, pending a formal request from relevant authorities.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Peace Operations, affirmed the UN’s readiness during a press briefing at the organization’s headquarters in New York on Wednesday
“The United Nations stands ready to respond to any call from Member States to deploy a police force in Gaza,” Lacroix stated. He emphasized that the UN would act upon the request of competent bodies seeking assistance amid the ongoing crisis.
Lacroix highlighted the critical challenges hindering humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza, citing a notable increase in incidents of looting.
He stressed the urgent need to address these issues, proposing that involving a neutral third party could potentially mitigate tensions and facilitate aid delivery.
The Deputy Secretary-General acknowledged the complexities involved in deploying a UN peacekeeping force, noting that such action would require procedural steps involving the UN Security Council.
The war, which began on October 7, 2023, has led to severe devastation in Gaza, resulting in a humanitarian catastrophe with tens of thousands of civilian casualties, predominantly women and children.
As the war enters its eighth month, Gaza remains in ruins, its residents grappling with acute shortages of essential supplies such as food, clean water, and medical aid.
The blockade imposed by the IOF on the enclave has further compounded the humanitarian crisis, raising urgent calls for international intervention.
Israel faces allegations of genocide before the International Court of Justice, with recent rulings urging an immediate cessation of military activities in Rafah.
The city, home to over a million Palestinians seeking refuge from the relentless bombardment of the IOF, has been facing intense Israeli military operations since May 6, underscoring the escalating humanitarian emergency.
