Rabat – Palestine, Russia, and Turkiye have issued statements to condemn the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was murdered in a raid at his residence in Tehran, Iran.

Hamas confirmed the assassination of its leader early on Wednesday, blaming Israel for the raid.

“The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas mourns to our great Palestinian people, to the Arab and Islamic nation, and to all the free people of the world: Brother, leader, martyr, Mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, who was killed in a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran,” Hamas said in a statement.

Hamas blamed Israel for the assassination of Haniyeh. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also confirmed Haniyeh’s assassination. The group said that Haniyeh was killed along with his bodyguard.

While the news was celebrated by Israeli officials, it caused a global uproar among many countries.

Far-right Heritage Minister in Israel Amihai Elihau celebrated the killing of the Hamas leader, claiming that his death makes “the world a little better.”

President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas strongly condemned the killing of Haniyeh.

A statement from Abbas’s office said the president deemed the killing a “cowardly act and a serious escalation.” “He urged our people and their forces to unite, remain patient, and stand firm against the Israeli occupation,” Palestinian news agency Wafa reported today. Turkiye also condemned the assassination of the Hamas leader, describing it as “heinous.”

“The attack shows the Netanyahu government has no intention of achieving peace,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said, noting that the assassination aims to spread the war in Gaza to a regional level.

Russia also condemned the killing of Hamas’ chief political leader, describing it as an “absolutely unacceptable political murder.”

A deputy Russian foreign minister told RIA state news agency today that the situation will lead to further escalation of tensions. Iran also commented on the killing, noting that Haniyeh’s “blood will never be wasted.” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said: “Haniyeh’s martyrdom in Tehran will strengthen the deep and unbreakable bond between Tehran, Palestine, and the resistance.”

Haniyeh’s killing comes amid an already fragile situation as Israeli Occupation Forces continue their massacres targeting civilians in Gaza since October 7. The death toll reached over 39,300 victims, with  more than 90,000 people were injured. Reports indicate that tens of thousands of bodies are still under the rubble.
