Marrakech – Morocco’s Olympic football team faces today a crucial match against Iraq at the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice. With a spot in the knockout stage on the line, head coach Tarik Sektioui knows his team has no choice but to secure a victory.
“It’s a make-or-break match for us,” Sektioui told the Moroccan football federation’s media channel. “The team that loses will be eliminated, while the winner advances to the next round. There will be a lot of competitiveness and high spirits, and the small details will make the difference,” he added.
Morocco, Iraq, Argentina and Ukraine are all tied on 3 points each in Group B after two matches. Morocco opened with an impressive 2-1 win over Argentina before suffering a surprising 2-1 loss to Ukraine in their second game.
Sektioui acknowledged that lessons must be learned from the Ukraine defeat in order to avoid similar mistakes against Iraq. “We were closer to winning,” he explained. “But Ukraine managed to score a devastating goal in the final moments.”
The Moroccan coach identified a lack of speed in transitioning from one area to another and an unwillingness to alter attacking patterns as key factors in the loss. He emphasized that players need to penetrate more into the penalty area and show a strong desire to score goals.
Iraq also has everything to play for after a 2-1 win over Ukraine and a 3-1 loss to Argentina. Their coach Radhi Shenaishil expressed confidence in his team’s ability to limit Morocco’s threat and emerge victorious.
“We have a historic match against Morocco and with all due respect to their potential, we believe we have the ability to contain their danger,” Shenaishil said. “We will play in a completely different way because it’s a decisive match with no margin for error.”
The stakes couldn’t be higher as the two Arab nations face off for a place in the quarterfinals. Morocco is seeking to reach the knockout stage for only the second time in its history after first achieving the feat at the 1972 Munich Games.
But to do so, Sektioui’s men will need to put the Ukraine loss behind them and deliver a complete performance against a determined Iraqi side.
