Rabat – Morocco’s under-23 drew 2-2 with Argentina in a thrilling Group B opener at the Olympic Games in Paris. The game took place at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Etienne, which Moroccan fans filled to the brim.
The game started with high energy from both sides, as Argentina looked to assert their dominance early. However, Morocco’s well-organized defense and counter-attacks kept the Albiceleste at bay.
The first half was a hard-fought battle with numerous attempts from both teams. Argentina’s forward Julian Alvarez made several promising runs, but Moroccan goalkeeper Mounir Mohamedi was in top form as he made crucial saves.
As the first half progressed, Morocco gained momentum, and their efforts paid off right on the stroke of half-time. In the overtime of the first half, a well-executed move saw Ilias Akhomach’s backheel find Bilal El Khannouss, who delivered a low cross to Soufiane Rahimi. The latter hammered the ball into the net from close range, giving Morocco a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half began with the Atlas Lions maintaining their confidence and control. Just four minutes in, Morocco was awarded a penalty after Akhomach was fouled by Argentina’s Julio Soler. Rahimi stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, sending the ball into the net and extending Morocco’s lead to 2-0.
Determined to fight back, Argentina increased their attacking pressure. In the 67th minute Giuliano Simeone made an immediate impact. Simeone found the back of the net with a well-placed shot, reducing the deficit to 2-1 and reviving Argentina’s hopes.
Despite Argentina’s efforts to equalize, Morocco’s defense held firm. Rahimi nearly secured a hat-trick, but his shot was easily caught by Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
However, seconds before the final whistle Argentina managed to level the score with a draw-turning shot by Cristian Nicolas.
