Rabat – The African Union (AU) Executive Council has kicked off its 45th ordinary session in Accra, Ghana, with Morocco playing a key role in the discussions.
The session, which began today, saw the participation of Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, along with a high-level delegation.
Over the course of the two-day meeting, foreign ministers from AU member countries will tackle a range of significant issues.
Key among them is the review of the 48th ordinary session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) and the activity report focusing on the AU’s theme for 2024: “Educating an Africa fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient educational systems for increased access to inclusive, quality, lifelong learning relevant to Africa.”’
The session will also explore the AU’s engagement with the G20 and other strategic partnerships, alongside the adoption of the AU’s budget for 2025. Morocco is keen to use this platform to promote its candidacies for pivotal roles within the AU framework.
A pivotal topic on the agenda is the AU’s role in the upcoming G20 summit in Brazil this November. The Executive Council will deliberate on how to effectively position the continent’s interests on the global stage during this high-profile event.
In addition to institutional matters, the council is expected to address pressing security challenges plaguing the continent.
These include the rise of militant groups in West Africa and the Sahel, ongoing conflicts in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the broader implications of these crises for regional stability.
Climate change, another urgent issue, will also feature prominently in the discussions. The impact of climate variability on food security has become a critical concern, with millions across Africa facing heightened risks of famine and malnutrition.
The Moroccan delegation includes Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the AU and the UN Economic Commission for Africa; Ambassador Mohamed Methqal, director-general of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation; Ambassador Imane Ouaadil to Ghana; and Hassane Boukili, director of the Greater Maghreb, UMA Affairs, and AU at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
