Marrakech – The highly anticipated Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday night was overshadowed by dramatic scenes of crowd chaos and disorder that led to the match being delayed by over an hour.

Argentina ultimately prevailed 1-0 in extra time to claim their record 16th Copa America title, but the aftermath was dominated by questions about security and crowd control.

In the hours leading up to kickoff, thousands of ticketless fans attempted to forcibly enter the stadium by climbing fences, pushing through barriers, and even crawling through air vents.

Video footage and photos on social media showed crowds heaving against gates until they burst open. Miami-Dade police and stadium security struggled to control the situation, at times overwhelmed by the sheer numbers.

Some ticketed fans, including families with children, found themselves caught up in the melee and unable to enter.

The start of the match was pushed back from 8 p.m. EDT (00:00 GMT) to 9:22 p.m. EDT (01:22 GMT) as officials tried to restore order. Even after the game began, security personnel could be seen checking tickets and removing fans from seats they weren’t assigned to.

Both the Argentina and Colombia teams had to briefly leave the pitch during the chaos.

On the field, the match remained deadlocked 0-0 through 90 minutes. The game took an emotional turn when Argentina star Lionel Messi left the game in the 66th minute in tears with an apparent ankle injury.

Finally, in the 112th minute of extra time, Argentina forward Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goal off an assist from Giovani Lo Celso. Colombia’s 28-game unbeaten streak, stretching back to February 2022, came to an end.

For several Argentinian players, including Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi, this marked the end of their international careers on a high note. “I dreamed that I would arrive to the final and win it and retire in this way,” an emotional Di Maria said following the game. “I have so many beautiful feelings and I am eternally grateful to this generation.”

However, this golden moment was tarnished by the pre-game turmoil, raising serious concerns about Miami’s readiness to host 2026 World Cup matches.

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said in a statement: “Let’s be clear: This situation should have never taken place and cannot happen again. We will work with stadium leadership to ensure that a full review of tonight’s events takes place immediately.”

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and local organizers now face tough questions about security planning and crowd control measures. For a tournament already marred by shocking brawls between Uruguay players and Colombia fans after their semifinal, this disastrous final scene in Miami leaves a black mark that won’t soon be erased.

The glory of Argentina’s victory and Messi’s farewell will forever be linked with the specter of disarray and violence that threatened to spiral out of control.
