Rabat – Morocco’s ambassador to the US Youssef Amrani has emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation and dialogue between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and southern partners.

The diplomat made his remarks during a panel at the NATO Public Forum on the Washington Summit’s sidelines.

During the event, Amrani cited the partnership between Morocco and the organization, describing these ties as historical.

“Since the launch of the Mediterranean Dialogue the Kingdom has consistently sought, as a pioneer, to build a mutually beneficial collaboration with the alliance to jointly address cross-cutting challenges and shared threats,” he remarked.

Armani further emphasized that similar ties align with the principles of collective and indivisible security, seeking to address challenges.

Reiterating Morocco’s appeal for a shared responsibility to tackle challenges, Amrani called for a stronger political dialogue between NATO and its southern partners to promote mutual understanding and establish practical cooperation.

“The emergence of new security challenges calls more than ever for an integrated and comprehensive approach,” he added, advocating for more constructive, open, and regular discussions with the South to establish more assertive dynamics in interaction with Mediterranean partners.

Amrani also recalled King Mohammed VI’s Atlantic Initiative, describing it as a vision that presented a pragmatic and supportive mechanism for the whole region.

He emphasized that this approach reflects Morocco’s commitment to the region to build a corridor of shared development and prosperity.

NATO has frequently emphasized the importance of cooperation and alliance with Morocco in addressing security challenges.

The organization considers Morocco a traditional and a key partner, commending its longstanding commitment to international security.

Admiral Rob Bauer, Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, has also previously stressed Morocco’s key role and active participation in NATO exercises as well as its expertise in counterterrorism and irregular immigration control.

“NATO is proud to count Morocco among its partners,” Bauer said in remarks on the North African country in April.
