Rabat – Malawi reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity during high-level talks in Laayoune on Tuesday.
Nancy Tembo, Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, stressed her nation’s backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
Speaking alongside Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita at the inaugural session of their Joint Cooperation Commission, Tembo emphasized Malawi’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most credible and realistic pathway to resolving the regional dispute.
Tembo praised Morocco’s leadership in seeking regional stability and commended its efforts within the framework of the United Nations to find a practical and enduring resolution.
The top Malawian diplomat highlighted the opening of Malawi’s Consulate General in Laayoune in 2021 as a tangible sign of Malawi’s steadfast support.
She praised Morocco’s leadership in advocating for stability and emphasized the United Nations’ pivotal role in seeking a sustainable resolution to the Western Sahara dispute.
For his part, Minister Bourita commended Malawi’s stance on the Sahara and thanked Lilongwe for its consistent backing of Moroccan territorial integrity.
He highlighted the deepening of bilateral relations, noting the recent signing of several bilateral agreements spanning agriculture, infrastructure development, education, and cultural exchange.
In addition to solidifying economic ties, the agreements are expected to pave the way for enhanced collaboration in tourism, cultural exchanges, and religious affairs.
Bourita concluded today’s meeting by thanking Malawi for its consistent support, referencing the establishment of a Malawian Consulate General in Laayoune in 2021 and the East African country’s participation in international conferences backing Morocco’s autonomy plan.
