A shocking video showing a Muslim woman and her two-year-old son being deliberately run over by a vehicle in Russia has sparked a wave of outrage and deep concern online.

The viral video notably depicts the car’s driver verbally abusing and deliberately running over a hijab-wearing woman who was accompanied by her child.

Munsif Daily reported on the case on Monday, saying that the 27-year-old Gulniso Salimova and her two-year-old were hospitalized following th Islamophobic attack.

The news outlet further stressed that security services confirmed the arrest of the suspect while an investigation to determine the motives is still ongoing.

The case sparked widespread outrage online, with many calling on the Russian government to take strict actions against Islamophobia.

“Russia should take strict action against any Islamophobia or anti-Muslim activities,” one commenter wrote on X.

Another suggested that while Islamophobia has long been a daily concern in Russia, “it has been successfully suppressed by Vladimir Putin to achieve its geopolitical goals.”

A March report by Le Monde echoes the alarmed commenter’s suggestion, with the news outlet notably stressing that the country had been experiencing a concerning resurgence of Islamophobia in the wake of the Crocus City Hall terrorist attacks.

“Central Asian Muslims have been the target of Russian nationalists. Yet the authorities are increasingly in need of migrants, not least because of the war in Ukraine,” Le Monde wrote.
