Rabat –  Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of Yemen’s Houthi movement, launched a sharp critique against Morocco’s stance on the Palestinian cause in a recent televised address.

Speaking on Thursday on the Houthi-affiliated channel Al-Masirah, al-Houthi accused Morocco of being a “collaborator, a traitor, and complicit with the Israeli enemy.”

Al-Houthi’s remarks mark a new phase in the ongoing tension between the Houthi movement, which is backed by Iran, and Morocco. The Houthis appear to be attempting to undermine Morocco’s position on the Palestinian cause by framing Moroccan government as being at odds with the sentiments and aspirations of the broader Arab and Muslim community.

He criticized Morocco for increasing its economic engagement with Israel and expressed disappointment over what he described as a significant divide between the Moroccan government’s actions and the values of Islam and the Quran.

Al-Houthi’s remarks came during a broader speech where he condemned various Arab governments for their ties with Israel, but his pointed criticism of Morocco stood out.

Al-Houthi claimed that there is a clear distinction between the Moroccan government’s policies and the feelings of the Moroccan people. He commended Moroccans for their persistent resistance to normalization, asserting that there is a “continuous movement” within the country in support of the Palestinian cause.

However, the Moroccan government, led by King Mohammed VI, has been an outspoken supporter of the Palestinian cause and showed longstanding commitment to supporting Palestinian rights.

The King, who also chairs the Al-Quds Committee, has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in Gaza in the wake of the ongoing Israeli war on the region.

The monarch is also a strong advocate for a two-state solution, calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem.

In his Throne Day speech in July, King Mohammed VI expressed deep concern about the situation in Gaza. He emphasized the need for a genuine solution to the Palestinian crisis, advocating for a two-state solution with Gaza as part of an independent Palestinian state and East Jerusalem as its capital.

He stressed that regional stability and security can only be achieved through this framework and highlighted Morocco’s ongoing humanitarian aid efforts to Palestine.

Amid the Israeli war on Gaza, the King initiated a humanitarian effort by sending aid to Gaza, including food, water, and medical supplies.

This aid, totaling 40 tons, was intended to address severe shortages in local hospitals caused by ongoing Israeli attacks. The shipment, which included essential medicines and equipment for treating burns, surgical emergencies, and trauma care, was delivered through the Karem Abu Salem crossing.
