Rabat – Mohammed VI Polytechnic University’s (UM6P) laboratory for Inorganic Materials for Sustainable Energy technologies (LIMSET) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Capgemini to identify innovative solutions for hydrogen storage in the automotive sector.

A statement from UM6P said the partnership reflects a joint desire to explore sustainable energy solutions. It also shows the importance of hydrogen as a “clean alternative energy source for transportation,” the press release added.

“The combined strengths of LIMSET’s research and Capgemini’s practical experience in hydrogen mobility promise exciting and innovative developments,” the statement said, noting that the partnership is a significant step towards positioning hydrogen as a practical and sustainable option for the transportation industry.

Emphasizing the importance of hydrogen and its potential across different sectors, the statement further detailed that LIMSET is engaged in developing advanced storage solutions –  particularly for heavy-duty vehicles – where hydrogen can contribute to reducing carbon emissions and meeting growing environmental requirements.

Under the agreement, Capgemini is determined to continue its strategy in sustainable energy, with focusing on scientific partnerships with renowned universities like UM6P.

The group aims to continue to support research and develop innovative solutions in the transportation sector.

General Director of Capgemini Engineering for Morocco and Egypt, Mouna Benazzou, commented on the partnership, noting that the cooperation with UM6P reflects the group’s commitment to creating a future where energy is cleaner, sustainable, and more affordable.

“At Capgemini, we support our clients in developing solutions to meet these climate challenges. This project is not just a technological advancement but a step towards realizing our shared vision of an environmentally respectful energy industry,” she added.

Faik Abdessamad, Director of LIMSET also expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, noting that the initiative aims to address tomorrow’s energy challenges through creating sustainable and efficient technologies for various applications.

“It is based on a shared vision of energy transition and sustainable development, with the ambition to design solutions tailored to these challenges,” he said.

He further went on to say the cooperation with Capgemini reflects a shared commitment to transforming the challenges associated with hydrogen into concrete opportunities, all while valuing natural resources and working towards a cleaner and more prosperous energy future.

Morocco has consistently expressed determination to enhance efforts in strengthening the renewable energy and hydrogen sectors, recognizing their vital role in achieving sustainable development.

In January, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch touted the country’s assets and efforts in advancing development of green hydrogen, citing the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline – an initiative that aims to support the energy security of both West Africa and the European Union.

Morocco aims to capitalize on its natural resources, advantageous geographic location, and human capital to develop the green hydrogen sector, he said, noting that Morocco is “favorably positioned on the global hydrogen map.”

The country aims to harness this asset across various sectors like the automotive industry, which has shown significant promise and growth in Morocco.

In 2023, Morocco’s automotive exports to the EU was set at €15.1 billion in 2023, edging out China, whose exports reached €13.6 billion.
